Contents summary

The contents summary provides information about the number of displayed pages for each source (including wrappers, advertisements, music text, blanks, etc.). Images of one or more pages in several sources are not available for reproduction; reference to the missing material is made as appropriate (e.g. 62-Ae, 7–2-Ae, 322-Ae).

Blank pages are not reproduced in OCVE (cf. CFEO); however, an image of the title page of each source is provided, likewise half-titles and catalogue extracts found within individual scores or their covers as relevant.

The physical make-up of constituent scores can be discerned from the information accompanying the thumbnails of individual pages. For the sake of consistency with ACO and CFEO, and despite the omission of blank pages, the system used for the pagination of printed editions in both ACO and CFEO is employed here as well. When printed pagination begins with ‘1’, any preceding pages without numbering are designated by lower-case roman numerals in square brackets; conversely, where the actual pagination starts with a number other than ‘1’, bracketed arabic numerals up to the first printed page number are assigned to the unnumbered pages before it, with lower-case roman numerals again in square brackets being used for any shortfall. Unnumbered pages at the end are indicated with arabic numerals in square brackets, following on from the last printed page number.

Covers are separately paginated from [1] to [4]; the pagination takes into account blank pages which are not reproduced. (In many cases, only p. [1] is included in the online resource – e.g. 33–1-B&H. P. [4] is also incuded if it contains a catalogue extract – e.g. 65–1f-B&H.) For precise information about the number and position of blank pages in a complete score, reference should be made to CFEO and/or ACO, where detailed descriptions are given of the majority of these sources.[1]

The pagination of manuscripts often presents challenges: among other things, it is sometimes no longer visible on pages which were cut down when material underwent conservation or was bound. In a number of cases, there are multiple paginations, i.e. by leaf, by page, taking into account or ignoring blank pages, etc. (e.g. 28–A-Stichvorlage, 65A-sketch). As with printed sources, OCVE omits blank pages found within manuscripts but without taking them into account in the pagination. All existing pagination which is consistent with the material reproduced on the site has been preserved. When it begins with ‘1’, the title page of the manuscript (if such a page exists) is designated ‘[i]’ (e.g. 35Copy/Stichvorlage-Gutman); in exceptional cases where the pagination begins with ‘2’, the title page is designated ‘[1]’ (e.g. 4A-Stichvorlage). For sources in which the pagination is missing or has not been retained because of inconsistencies, the one proposed here commences with ‘[i]’ (for the title page, if relevant), followed by ‘[1]’ for the first page of the music text, then ‘[2]’ etc. (e.g. 501-Stichvorlage, 561-Stichvorlage).

[1] The editions which do not feature in ACO include Nocturne Op. 9 No. 2 (9/2Mikuli-KI), Mazurka Op. 67 No. 4 (67/4Ganche), Mazurka from the album of Maria Szymanowska (MazA-flatG&W), and Nocturne in C minor (NocCMaho, NocCTWMP).
